A new district for Basel
The name ‘Neues Klybeck’ reflects the transformation of the industrial site in Kleinbasel into a new part of the city. Klybeck is staying true to itself, but growing: new paths to the Rhine, new squares and open spaces, new homes and green parks, and new neighbourhoods that connect with existing districts.
Neues Klybeck combines urban living with easy access to nature, providing space for social interaction and variety, and offering new perspectives for all.
A neighbourhood in motion
The site is already being used for work, learning, production and research. Novartis continues to use the premises, while LifeMine and MonteRosa Therapeutics conduct research here. Wesemann is constructing laboratory facilities, including those for the neighbouring companies. Mycrobez produces foam from mushrooms and Sintares manufactures binders from non-petroleum materials. Tuyu Tofu produces tofu using a Korean recipe with Swiss organic soya beans; Hard Labor Brew brews unfiltered beer; and the Jungle Brothers make kombucha.
In the workshops of the KLY675 collective, people potter, create animations, design and paint. Around 1,000 students from the KV School Basel complete their training on the site. The Klybeck canteen, which was built in 1967 by Suter+Suter from reinforced concrete, is now used by Ryago to prepare 4,500 meals a day.
Anyone wishing to move onto the site will soon be able to do so. FLOW, with its 19,000 m² of laboratory and office space situated directly on the Rhine, is expected to be ready for occupation in Q3 2029. Companies in the life sciences sector in particular can establish a base here. Residential development on the site will be possible as soon as the development plan comes into force, which is currently expected to be by the end of 2028. Until then, the focus will be on commercial space.
A brand that connects
The graphic symbol of Neues Klybeck, the bridging ‘NK’, represents the new connections being forged here, between industry and residential living, existing buildings and new developments, and the past and the present.
The visual language has been deliberately kept light and accessible, but behind it lies a serious concern: what is being created here should suit the people who already live in the area just as much as those who will find a new home or workplace here in the future.
This philosophy is also reflected in the new website. It tells stories from the neighbourhood, provides insights into the site's history and shows what is being created and what is yet to come. At the same time, it showcases future developments and highlights available spaces.
The launch of ‘Neues Klybeck’ marks the beginning of the next stage in the development of the Klybeck site, as it is transformed into a green, diverse, climate-friendly district of Basel. Neues Klybeck is the beginning of something new, and an invitation to join this journey.
