“We have already fitted out several laboratories on the Klybeck site,” says Benjamin Corkovic. He is the Managing Director of Wesemann Schweiz AG. The company offers bespoke laboratory furnishings — in other words, laboratory benches, cabinets, fume cupboards and everything else needed for safe day-to-day work in the lab.
“We supply laboratories to schools, universities and, of course, the private sector,” says Benjamin Corkovic. At the heart of the offering is the DELTA 30 furniture system. One of its advantages is its modularity: the elements can be reorganised at any time and adapted to new ways of working. For teaching and training, there is a dedicated product line designed to support knowledge transfer in the best possible way — including experiment stations. Naturally, the laboratories comply with the relevant standards and have the required certifications.
Everything from a single source
This is where the subsidiary RPG Kunstststoff GmbH comes in. The company produces small batches of plastic components for businesses in the chemical industry and for laboratories. These include ducts and pipes, for example for ventilation. Once everything is ready for installation, the second subsidiary takes over: LABCO handles the assembly of the laboratories and plastic installations. The experts are also on hand whenever conversions or adaptations are needed. All three companies rent space on the site — both for their work and to store components.
There is a simple reason why Wesemann and its subsidiaries carry out part of their activities on the Klybeck site. “Wherever we need to go, we can get there quickly,” Corkovic explains. Thanks to the central location and the proximity to the motorway and the border in the tri-border region, distances are short. But the site offers further advantages too.
Laboratories — today and tomorrow
Neues Klybeck is located in Europe’s leading life sciences cluster. For companies such as Wesemann, this is a major advantage: their clients are practically on the doorstep. Work, research and teaching are already taking place here today. And there will be significantly more of all three in the years ahead.
The company moved to the industrial site in 2017 and is, in a way, keeping its history alive. “It is a pleasure to work on a site with such a remarkable past,” says Corkovic. The roots of this important place for Basel go back to 1864, when dye industry pioneer Alexander Clavel relocated his production here.
For Corkovic, the fact that laboratories are once again being created on the same site more than 150 years later brings things full circle. With Neues Klybeck, the next chapter has been launched — for at least the next 150 years.
